Using Brushes with Charcoal

Today I wanted to share one of my favorite ways to work with charcoal; we will work through how I use brushes and apply powdered charcoal to the page.

In this video, I am using the following:

  • Coffee beans from my local roastery

  • Strathmore 400 Toned Tan paper, 9x12 inches

  • General’s 4B soft charcoal pencil

  • Sanding block/paddle/re-tipping tool/lead pointer

  • Compressed charcoal stick

  • Flat tip paintbrush

  • Music from William Agosto’s YouTube channel because it’s awesome
